Yubu Island

The final post about our Okinawan Adventure! When we travelled to Iriomote Island the weather was so bad that we had to take a ferry to a different port. The next bus to take us to the other port - where the hotel staff would pick us up - was not for 2 and a half hours! Needless to say, we were pretty annoyed. But every cloud has a silver lining... Three young Japanese men in a car kindly stopped and said they could take us to Yubu Island - about half way between the two ports. It was a great opportunity for more sightseeing!

Yubu Island is the smallest of the Yeayama Islands. It is right next to the eastern side of Iriomote, and the water separating the two islands is so shallow that you could do the crossing on foot. However, most people take the water buffalo taxi!

It was a really fun way to travel and the driver sang to us and played the shamisen.

On the island we visited a butterfly sanctuary and various other water buffalo - but the transportation was definitely the highlight!

I'm a water buffalo and Jonathan is the famous Iriomote wildcat! They are an endangered species that can only be found on Iriomote, but all the inhabitants of Iriomote that I asked said they had never seen one. They are very elusive little cats...

We had such a wonderful trip but it would definitely had been more beautiful in the summer. I'm already planning when we can go back...
