The next day in Kagoshima, we visited Sengan-en. It is a beautiful garden and the old house of an important Japanese family. Again, we could see the volcano from the garden. I guess it's not a bad place to build a house!
Japanese gardens really are beautiful. A mix of trees, stones, ponds... And great use of the natural landscape too.
We had a tour of the old style house, which had a touch of England in it! Many years ago, this part of Japan was known as the 'Satsuma Peninsula', and England had a little battle with this place. Everything turned out okay though: Satsuma and England maintained a good relation, and satsumas were introduced to Japan from this place! That's where the name comes from! I never knew that satsumas came from Japan before.
(Our new camera is alright, isn't it?)
Big Tash and little volcano.
We weren't allowed to take pictures during the house tour, but it was beautiful. We were served tea in the 'tea room' and this was the view.
We spent all day at this place. We didn't expect to, but it was great! We even climbed up a small hill to get a great view of the volcano across the sea.
