Hiking in Nara: Mt Takatori

We have recently got really into hiking! In practice for Fuji-san (we are going this month...) we bought a new hiking bag and have been practicing. But, this hike may be the best thing we've done in Japan so far.. It was incredibly beautiful.
The walk starts through an edo-style Japanese town. Throughout this hike we saw nobody else. It was so peaceful and great to enjoy the nature in peace.

A nice temple near the bottom of the mountain.

As you can see, Jonny has the bag and I have nothing! I'm very lucky he lets me do that... it makes hiking that much easier for me.

The great thing about this hike is that it used to be the grounds of a castle. So, throughout the hike you see amazing castle ruins. This picture is taken from where the castle lookout was located. It was cloudy so the view wasn't so clear, but it's a great spot to spy oncoming armies!

Ruins everywhere... We felt like we were in Tomb Raider or something.

Somehow looking happy after the incline.

This hike took us about 6 hours. A very long time, but completely worth it. Being alone amongst the nature is amazing.
Near the end of the trail, you come across the most incredible image. A pagoda poking out of the trees.

And then a gigantic Buddha statue in the temple complex.

And, no one knows about this. I have been telling all my Japanese students where I went and nobody knows where it is. A haven. It was absolutely incredible.
